Critical edition of a novel by Francisco Carlos Ortea (1845-1899) Dominican writer and journalist who was forced into exile to Puerto Rico in 1880 by Dominican dictator Ulises Heureuax Lebert (1845-1899) where he worked as journalist for several newspaper on the island and becoming the owner of La correspondencia de Puerto Rico founded in 1890. In Puerto Rico in addition to publishing numerous newspaper articles he also published three novels, La enlutada del tranvía (1889), El tesoro de Cofresí (1889) and Margarita (1889) a novel which provides a good description of Puerto Rican society during the 19th century, particularly in the cities of Ponce and Mayagüez where the novel is set.
