About This Book

This work is devoted to a fundamental late-antique pagan text of Neoplatonic influence: De diis et mundo, a brief manual of Neoplatonic piety that has been attributed to Emperor Julian's friend Saturninus Sallustius Secundus. The text was written during Emperor Julian's religious reforms, a time when Julian was attempting to revive traditional Greco-Roman polytheism in order to combat a Christianity that was growing ever stronger. This work addresses Sallustius' conception of the gods, providence, eschatology, and metempsychosis. It ends with a brief look at the nature of paganism after Julian and Sallustius.
