About This Book
With a significant number of works, artist Virginia Patrone enters the world created by the lyrics of the tango song "La Cumparsita" by Gerardo Matos Rodriguez in which, like so many other tangos, portrays women in two antagonistic images: the sensual and lustful prostitute in one and the holy mother and virginal bride until marriage in the other. Although this is perhaps a gender typecast of the late 19th and early 20th centuries sexist and patriarchal Rio de la Plata culture, it remains implicit in the model of beauty with which our society continues to put pressure on women, despite the many advances, gender integrations, etc.
