About This Book

This publication was printed in commemoration of the laying of the cornerstone at Winthrop's Main Building, later renamed Tillman Administration Building. From 1886 to 1894, Winthrop's campus was located in Columbia, South Carolina and after placing the winning bid for Winthrop's permanent location, the women's school relocated to Rock Hill, South Carolina. The laying of the cornerstone at the main campus building thus marked the beginning of more than a century old relationship with the city of Rock Hill. This publication documents the history of Winthrop up to 1894 and serves as a good source for researchers interested in the history of the institution.
