In this book, the pictorial world of the first Christians is presented, where decorations of everyday things and graves constitute an overlooked pictorial material from the crucial, formative period of Christianity. From the ancient heritage of the Mediterranean cultures in the multicultural Roman Empire, a rich imagery emerged, which the book draws from the vast geographical area, which stretches from the Euphrates River in the east to Roman Britain in the west, but with a focus on Italy in 200-400 century. The book is the first complete presentation of the subject in Danish, where the pictorial material is compiled kaleidoscopically with a diverse text universe that involves contemporary church fathers, theologians and apocryphal traditions in addition to the biblical texts in a dialogue that makes the book a breakthrough. It can be read as a guide to the oldest Christian sights, such as cemeteries and churches in Rome. Or as an eye-opener for those who want to trace the origins of centuries-old church art.
