About This Book

Joe was coachman to Mrs Street, the owner of a big house above Judge's Bay in Auckland, on part of what is now Parnell Park. Joe and his wife Sarah lived with their three children in the coachman's cottage. Joe Brown had been taken to England by a former employer. There he met Sarah, a children's nurse in one of the houses they visited. She came back to New Zealand with him, homesick at times but his helper always. In later years, Joe kept a coalyard and ran a taxi, still in Parnell. The author is the daughter of Joe and Sarah. She remembers them, their employers and the neighbours and old Parnell.
