Brewster notes in a typewritten note attached to one volume, "The course could be taken twice in successive years, during each of which six or seven plays were read, exactly and minutely . . . These notes, when legible, are a very complete record of Professor Child's famous course, that is to say, of the chief undergraduate course of one of the great scholars of the nineteenth century."
