About This Book

Friederike Walter understands her paintings as thinking spaces. Her chromatically discreet and clearly composed paintings invite us to take a contemplative break. Several superimposed layers of oil create shimmering surfaces of continuous color gradients, creating the illusion of spaces in which only light is captured and reflected. The painted spaces do not depict real occurrences, but stem from the artist's imagination. By eliminating such elementary aspects as scale and statics for orientation in space, her paintings elude unambiguous legibility. Deliberately held in abeyance, the paintings prove to be thought-constructs, the meaningful resolution of which is denied us. Instead, they raise questions about the truth of what is visible and what lies beyond this. Exhibition: Galerie Maurer, Frankfurt, Germany (03.09. - 23.10.2021).
