Noah Major lived in the neighborhood of Martinsville in Morgan county, IN from the age of nine in 1832 until 1911. Dr. Logan Esarey, the Secretary of the Indiana Historical Survey at Indiana University who edited this volume, wrote in the Introduction that as far as he knew, this book was the finest tribute in existence to Hoosier pioneers.
