About This Book

This book is a Kannada Exposition of the famous and popular Indian astronomical text in Sanskrit, "GRAHA LAAGHAVAM" of the celebrated Indian astronomer, Ganesha Daivajna (1520 CE). The greatness of the text lies in simplifying all the astronomical procedures for computations of the Sun, the Moon and the planets as also of Lunar and Solar Eclipses etc. by disposing of the trigonometric functions, "sine" and "cosine". These are replaced with ver good approximate algebraic expression, first developed by Bhaskara I (629 CE). This remarkable innovation of Ganesha Daivajna made his text extremely popular among astronomers, particularly the compilers of astronomical almanacs ("Panchaangas") for whom the frequent computations of trigonometric ratios
of all sorts of angles was a big bugbear!
