"Rhine Valley versus Inn Valley"--In his profound introductory essay Otto Kapfinger uses this heading to outline developments in Austria's two western federal provinces. But he also emphasises their common feature: "building in alpine areas". The book introduces a spectrum of important recent buildings, separated into different categories and including works by the emerging younger generation. It is shown clearly that architecture in Vorarlberg has detached itself from its "Baukunstler" past and also from its regional roots. The new focal points are energy-conscious, ecological and industrial building. In Tyrol this development took place at a somewhat later date and was also less regionally defined.
