Family memoir narrated by son of Chinese man sent by his family to work in Baja California in early 20th century, his adaptation to life in Mexico, and family he raised. Considerable portion of book is devoted to life of his brother, who returned to China to serve in People's Army, was wounded and spent rest of his life there despite family's efforts to extract him.
