Past indiscretions force criminal lawyer, Jake Dellahunt to move to an island to put his life back together again. Inheriting his old law partner's house on Martha's Vineyard and the huge Wampanoag Native American handyman who lives there, Jake is drawn back into the courtroom to keep a promise to his old partner to solve a 1942 island murder mystery while defending neighbors and friends charged with various crimes - attempted murder - killing a neighbor's dog and stuffing its decapitated head into a mailbox.
