In 1974, Olivio, eight years old, arrives in suburban Lyon, France with his mother after fleeing the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal that has claimed the life of his father. When Olivia's mother marries Max, an Algerian ex-pat who does not care for him, Olivio meets Ahmed, an Algerian immigrant of the same age who becomes a friend for life.
