About This Book

This study was designed to permit extensive comparisons of political attitudes, beliefs, and behavior within and among states and regions, and across the United States as a whole. Particular attention was given to analysis of the 1968 presidential, gubernatorial, and United States senatorial elections. Data on approximately 500 politically-relevant variables were collected from a sample of Americans. Interviews were carried out by the field staff of Louis Harris and Associates during the month following the November 1968 elections. To facilitate comparisons within and among states, separate surveys were conducted in each of 13 states, chosen to represent the largest states and a variety of regions. The states are Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Texas. A supplementary sample of respondents was interviewed to represent the other contiguous 35 states and Washington D.C. With proper weighting the data obtained are representative of each of the 13 states, of seven national regions, and of the nation as a whole.
