About This Book
This is a collection of essays by seventeen international scholars, dedicated to Professor Nicholas Hammond. The scope of the book is fourth-century Greek and Macedonian history, archaeology, and source studies, and is divided into these three sections.
Sources studied include Thucydides, Diodorus Siculus, Arrian, and Polybius; a new archaeological site with plates is presented, as is a hitherto unpublished krater from Macedonia, and the use of numismatic evidence is used to discuss the earlier Argead monarchy in a novel and important way. Historical essays centre on Philip II's diplomacy; a new interpretation of the controversy surrounding Alexander the Great's request for deification; Antipater, a long neglected figure; a new evaluation of the Greek attitude to Macedonian hegemony; Agis III, and important and new implications for Macedonian manpower; and even Xenophon's exile.
The essays represent the most recent contributions to scholarship in these areas, and exhibit a freshness in style making both appealing and important reading.
