"The conquest of the Hospitaller state of Rhodes in 1522 plunged the Order of St John into a serious crisis of legitimacy and threatened its existence. By losing sovereign power over Rhodes and withdrawing to southern Italy, the Order could no longer fulfil its charter....The point of this paper is to report on the period from 1523 to 1530, when the Order did not rule any state, and examine it as a fundamental legitimacy and thus existential crisis for the Order of St John."--P. 299.
