At first, Dash seems happy in the kennel, but after a few days he becomes apathetic, possibly even sick. But the children are too busy having fun on their vacation to worry. One day, Dot goes to the kennel and discovers that Dash is missing! After a sleepless night of worry, she finds he has mysteriously reappeared the next morning, and he is even less responsive. She decides to checks on him more often, and notices that he disappears every night and reappears each next morning. Soon she and Roger learn that the cook has been borrowing Dash each night to cheer up his daughter, Ellen Mary, who is crippled. Although Dot loves Dash, she wonders if she should give him up to Ellen Mary. Fortunately, Dr. Davidson finds a solution that leaves everyone content, and the Davidson family returns home from another wonderful vacation.
