Mary Woodwell

Mr. Lord, local Hopkinton historian and poet, wrote and published a series of local sketches, including "Mary Woodwell ," containing a chapter of early romantic history told in blank verse, interspersed with original articles in rhyme. Mary Woodwell was captured by Indians, April 22, 1746, from her father's farm in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. After many years as a captured servant, she found her freedom, married and eventually moved to Canterbury. Lord's verse reflects her years of captivity.
