About This Book
The book addresses various aspects of these extraordinary karst formations from different perspectives. The work is composed of three sections. In the first, dedicated to the caves, history and epigraphy comprises two studies: one concerning the god Chaahk and his activity in the caves, and another about the Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions in various caves. In the second part, reserved for caves and the underworld, historiography and ethnology, are presented in new reflections on the ideas that the ancient Maya had about these sacred spaces, as well as its remarkable continuity in the cosmovision of present communities. In the third and last section, the first chapter discusses the mortuary treatment practiced in the cenotes Canun (Yucatán) and in Las Calaveras (Quintana Roo), ), through underwater archaeology, and the second chapter accounts for the trade route of the pendant "Darien" discovered in the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itzá, from the place of its production to its final destination.
