About This Book

Maya Garfinkel, a student of the Barnard College class of 2019, recounts historical events of civil disobedience at Columbia University, such as the 1968 Occupation, 1985 South Africa Apartheid Divest, the 1996 Occupation and Hunger Strike, the 2007 Hunger Strike, and the 2016 Occupation of Low Library for Fossil Fuel Divestment. There is a quote from Al Dempsey, a former Columbia student and protester. Each segment has images of students speaking and campus demonstrations. Garfinkel also explains the tradition of civil disobedience and its relationship to the Black Radical Tradition.
