About This Book
Jan (Willem) Goossen, kind van Zeeuwse ouders, is in 1937 in Venezuela geboren waar zijn vader ingenieur bij Shell is. Het gezin Goossen verhuist regelmatig van Venezuela naar Nederland, naar Curaçao en Noord-Amerika. In 1949 komt Jan terug naar Nederland. In 1956 gaat hij naar het basisjaar van de Amsterdamse Kunstnijverheidsschool (Gerrit Rietveld Academie). Na een onderbreking in het eerste jaar studeert hij in 1961 cum laude af. Tijdens en na zijn studie is hij assistent en vriend van de beeldhouwer Wessel Couzijn. Van 1961 tot 1962 verblijft hij in Parijs met een beurs van Maison Descartes, in 1963 vertrekt hij naar San Francisco. Daar werkt hij als beeldhouwer en krijgt in 1967 de opdracht voor zijn eerste werk in de openbare ruimte Sculpture Wall. Hij studeert van 1965 tot 1967 architectuur aan het Heald College of Engineering in San Francisco, waar hij diverse architectuurprijzen wint. Goossen is in Amerika bevriend met de beeldhouwer Mark di Suvero. Terug in Nederland werkt hij in Amsterdam, Drenthe, Eindhoven en Heusden. Hij is beeldhouwer en tekenaar, maar van 1976 tot 1989 ook docent handvaardigheid met als specialiteit constructieve vorming, aan de lerarenopleiding in Tilburg waar hij zijn studenten tot het uiterste van hun kunnen weet te motiveren. Vanaf 1985 woont Goossen met zijn tweede echtgenote en beeldend kunstenaar Yvette Lardinois in het Noord-Brabantse Heusden (Herpt), maar in 2003 verhuizen ze naar het Zeeuwse Vrouwenpolder. Op 1 januari 2005 overlijdt Jan Goossen.

During and after his studies he is assistant and friend of the sculptor Wessel Couzijn. From 1961 to 1962 he stayed in Paris with a fair from Maison Descartes, in 1963 he left for San Francisco. He works there as a sculptor and in 1967 he gets the assignment for his first work in the public space Sculpture Wall. He studied architecture from 1965 to 1967 at the Heald College of Engineering in San Francisco, where he won various architectural awards. Goossen is in America with the sculptor Mark di Suvero. Back in the Netherlands he works in Amsterdam, Drenthe, Eindhoven and Heusden. He is a sculptor and draftsman, but from 1976 to 1989 he also teaches craftsmanship with a specialization in constructive training, at the teacher training in Tilburg where he knows how to motivate his students to the limit of their abilities. From 1985 Goossen lives with his second wife and visual artist Yvette Lardinois in Heusden (Herpt) in North Brabant, but in 2003 they move to the Zeeland Vrouwenpolder.
