About This Book

'Die Baroper Heimatgeschichte' gives an overview of the history of Barop, a suburb of the German city of Dortmund, from early times to 1972. It focuses on the transformation of the small rural village originally named Badorpe to an industrial powerhouse driven by the discovery and exploitation of coal in the Barop area. A large number of rare pictures and illustrations make for a good impression of what life was like in Barop - for the Polish immigrants, the farmers, the steel workers.

The book was written by historian Karl-Heinz Strothmann who was born in Dortmund-Barop in 1921 and spent his life covering Dortmund's history. He died in 1996 after having published a number of books on Dortmund and its suburbs.
