About This Book
The accelerated urbanization that occurs in Latin American cities, coupled with the occupation and expansion without planning of the territories, have caused the city to be divided into two, the formal and the informal city, increasing the gap of inequality in access to the necessary resources in housing, urban equipment, transport, healthy territories, public services and citizen security, factors that determine the subjective perception of the inhabitant regarding his sector and his levels of satisfaction in it. Therefore, from a quantitative research method, thirty-nine (39) indicators were defined participatoryly to characterize the habitability in urban settlements in three aspects (precarious, semi-consolidated and consolidated), seeking with this categorization to include variables and characteristics of the informal settlements of the city, which is why we worked with five leaders of the Yomasa sector, thirty (30) final semester students of the Civil Engineering program of the Catholic University of Colombia and the accompaniment of the Swiss Foundation for Technical Development (Swisscontact), team with which primary and secondary information was collected, the drafting of the instrument was adjusted, the instruction was refined for its application in the Yomasa sector and, finally, it was applied in that informal context. This work experience corroborated the need to adjust the indicators of sustainable cities to the informal city, since the socioeconomic, political, territorial and environmental dynamics differ widely from the formal city, although it could also be evidenced that in some of them converge in a similar way.
