About This Book
Jay Blackett is working on his Ph.D. in 18th Century plays at Columbia University. He has been dating another Ph.D. candidate, Susan, but she is apparently afraid of sex and unwilling to be intimate with Jay. So Jay also begins seeing Nancy, a waitress in an all-night diner who likes to get drunk and have wild sex. Although she wants a relationship with Jay, he knows she is not refined enough to join the faculty circle he socializes in, so he continues to see Susan.
Susan finds out that there is another woman, and determines to become more sexual before she loses Jay. Nancy, on the other hand, tells Jay about an unbalanced boyfriend who is about to be discharged from the army and expects to marry her. Jay thinks she is bluffing, but sure enough, the boyfriend shows up and starts a knife fight. Jay kills him in self-defence.
