About This Book

Because of the wide range of needs and uses, the BLM's routes represent a broad spectrum of linear features from engineered roadways with asphalt surfaces through challenging trails accessible only to nonmotorized traffic. A varied vocabulary is used to describe the linear features that includes roads, trails, paths, routes, and a host of other terms which leads to some confusion. The development of a consistent set of terms and definitions for use across the BLM is an essential first step to comprehensive travel management, and allows for effective interchange of management needs and information within and across programs, and with customers and stakeholders.
