About This Book
The first work known to include a section on the grammar and vocabulary of the dialect employed by "los indios del antiguo arzobispado de Lima" according to Medina: "Vocabulario de la lengua chinchaisuyo, y algunos modos mas vsados en dicha lengua" by Father Figueredo (leaves 53v.h59r.). What is stated in the second edition (Lima, 1754) of this revised and augmented version of Torres Rubio is "... por las repetidas missiones con que h corrido todo el Arzobispado de Lima, donde mas se usa la lengua Chinchaysuyo ..." (leaves 213v.-214r. [2nd count]). The question therefore is whether the dialect was that spoken in the diocese proper of Lima or throughout the length and breath of the Chinchaysuyu (i.e., the relationship between the Chinchaysuyu dialect and Quichua?). Prior to the Spanish conquest the Chinchaysuyu included the highlands of what are now Ecuador and southern Colombia.
