About This Book

The hospital building, due to its scale, complexity and symbolic character, has always attracted the attention of architects. In this book, architect and urbanplanner Luiz Carlos Toledo paints a sensitive picture on important issues related to hospital architecture in Brazil. The text begins with a brief study on the history of architecture for health in Brazil and worldwide. Next, the author presents the main philosophies of the hospital project, its norms, typologies and constituents and presents a rich bibliographic research. Finally, an interview with architects Flávio Bicalho and Regina Barcellos, who are responsible for the normative revolution of architecture for health, is in its entirety. The book is a new revised edition of the publication released by the Associação Brasileira para o Desenvolvimento do Edifício Hospitalar (ABDEH) in 2006, based on his master's thesis (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura, 2008)
