A systematic presentation of decisions by the European Court on Human Rights in Strassbourg on the implementation of Article 5 of the Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Extracts of all decisions for the period between July 1, 1961, and July 7, 2000, are presented. To date, this is the only such comprehensive presentation in the Russian language dealing with the Court's interpretation of the concepts of legal arrest, obligatory procedures, legal defense of arrestees, and other aspects of the right to liberty. The author compares the goals and values of the Convention with the reality of legal life in Russia and Ukraine.
