London, 1649. Charles I has been beheaded. Oliver Cromwell is running the country and a law has been passed stating that any unmarried woman who conceals the death of her child is guilty of murder. When a baby is found buried in the woods, all fingers point to Rachel Lockyer, an unmarried glovemaker who has been locked in a passionate love affair with political agitator William Walwyn. With William in the Tower, Rachel was alone, and - although no one is certain that she was actually pregnant - she is arrested.
