Ester Almqvist

Ester Almqvist (1869-1934) lived in times of great change. The circa 2,300 works that are part of Malmö Konstmuseum's collection range from suggestive landscapes from the turn of the century to portraits of women and colourful industrial scenes. Through the work of Ester Almqvist we encounter the breakthrough of Modern art and the story of the women's networks that flourished in the early 1900s. "Can you see that I live as though in two worlds: one is with my dear friends, artists and sun people - that existence always carries on where we left off, even if years have passed. And the other life: it is heavy and prehistoric, I would say, Swedish and rustic." 'Ester Almqvist: Jag lever I två världar' is a generously illustrated book that comprises an extensive biography as well as insightful texts in Swedish and English by Martina Sundberg and Cecilia Widenheim.
