About This Book

This catalogue presents works from three current cycles of work by Imi Knoebel, which, despite all their differences, refer back to a common starting point: the history of abstract painting. The Anima Mundi series consists of a clear and simple structure, the only variable is colour. These works contrast with his Kartoffelbilder (potato paintings), which feature oval shapes, irregularly positioned one on top of the other, as well as triangles and squares with a strong spatial element. In the Cut-up cycle of works, the colouring has been reduced to black, white and a silvery grey. The form consists of narrow strips, which point dynamically in all directions.0Exhibition: Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Vienna, Austria (15.11.2011-21.1.2012).
