The Elko District fire storm, August 15-20, 1964

Clair Whitlock, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko District Manager 1961-1966, tells firsthand experiences and remembrances of the summer of 1964 Boulder Flat, Maggie Creek, and Elko District fires. These devastating fires in northeastern Nevada contributed to the need for an interagency fire control unit, resulting in the formation of the Boise Interagency Fire Center, which later becomes the National Interagency Fire Center.
