Sam Durell was back in Paris, the City he had last seen when he had helped Orrin Boston get set up. Boston had been his fellow agent and friend─in so far as friends were allowed in this dirty business of espionage─and now he had been missing for fourteen days. In Paris Durell found Georges Brumont, suave and untrustworthy, Fred Hanson, debonaire and untrustworthy, and Madeleine, beautiful beyond belief but guilty and the most untrustworthy of them all. From these he learnt that Orrin Boston was dead─murdered by one of his own subordinates. Sam Durell's job was to settle the score.
