Tools of the trade

The UN's operations have relied almost exclusively on human observers for monitoring. This presence is essential, but simple observation with the human eye has many limitations. It is difficult to monitor vast territories and the challenges of detecting arms smuggling and illegal resources-exploitation are enormous. Modern monitoring technologies are tools that can solve many of these problems. Technologies can increase the range, effectiveness and accuracy of observation, also allowing observation at a safe distance.
