About This Book

More than a travelogue across seven seas, Balayan's book chronicles the voyage of the wooden sailboat "Kilikia", a replica of a sailboat from the era of the Kingdom of Cilicia (11th-14th centuries) as illustrated in medieval illuminated manuscripts housed in the Madenataran in Erevan, Armenia. From the Black Sea port of Poti, the sailboat and its crew, including Zori Balayan, travel through the Black Sea, Mediterranean, and Atlantic Ocean, finally reaching Amsterdam. Along the way, they visit port cities and in the process recreate voyages taken by Armenian merchants and the impressive naval fleet of the Kingdom of Cilicia nearly 1,000 years earlier.
