About This Book

This study seeks to reclaim the forgotten history of the "curas republicanos," the priests who supported the Second Spanish Republic. Like others defeated in the Spanish Civil War, they suffered the political oppression of Franco's regime; unlike others, however, they also suffered ecclesiastical oppression: defrocking, ostracism, canonical sanctions, excommunication. Since historiography under Franco focused on the stories of the victors, the history of the republican priests was largely forgotten, and the details of their lives have been difficult to discover. The goal of this work is to take on this difficult task and restore the memory of some of those priests who represented a more democratic Catholicism.
