About This Book
The construction of the Rambla Sur in the first two decades of the 20th century, is one of the most significant urban development works in the city of Montevideo, and was documented with thousands of photographs before, during and after its construction. The images, mostly in glass plate are from the holdings of the Fondo Histórico of the CdeF. "The section which today corresponds to the Rambla Sur, from the Sarandí breakwater to street Juan D. Jackson, was formed by rocks, quarries, small beaches and poor housing. One of the fundamental reasons for the construction of a promenade in this area was the willingness of the Government to eliminate the "Bajo", a poor district with brothels, located on the coast of the Old Town." (HKB Translation)-Page 5.
