National election study, 1948

The intent of this study was to obtain some knowledge of attitudes toward and motivation of the major political parties. This study was conducted in May 1948, before the conventions. Area sampling procedures were used in the states of California, Illinois, and New York. The respondents were questioned about party identification, party differences, labor and management problems, major problems facing their families and the government in the near future, the high cost of living, 1944 vote, and 1948 voting intentions. In addition, respondents were asked to evaluate Truman's general performance as a President and to respond to questions tapping their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with Truman's policy toward Russia, labor unions, minority groups, and Palestine.
