About This Book

Fast, outward-oriented, job-generating, private-sector-led growth is the key to eliminating poverty in Egypt and, ultimately, the standard by which the success of its current economic reform effort will be measured. But can the Egyptian private sector deliver that kind of growth? What are the impediments that should be removed for that to happen? This book is an attempt to answer those questions.

It is based on selected, edited papers contributed by local and foreign individuals and institutions during Egypt's First Private-Public Private Sector Development Conference, held in October 1994. A wide range of technical areas are covered (laws, regulations, finance, the role of the state, industry, and so on) with a common goal in mind: the articulation of a business environment conducive to growth.
