About This Book

As the title infers, this is a book about the descendants of Johannes Hartman who was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States on 15 August 1750 from Rotterdam via Portsmouth, England. They lived in West Pikeland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Johannes was on the 1774 Committee of Safety for the Revolutionary Causes. His son, Captain Peter Hartman, was an officer in the 2ne, 4th and 1st Battalion, Chester County Militia. He was made a Major in the 4th Battalion and fought at Brandywine and Germantown. During the encampment in 1777-1778 at Valley Forge, Major Hartman was a Wagon Master and found food and clothing for soldiers and cared for the sick.
