Galicia and Bukovina

Research guide to the former Austrian crownlands of Bukovina and Galicia in what is now the Ukraine. Bukovina or Bukowina was ruled by Austria from 1774-1918, and by Romania until 1945. Northern Bukowina became part of Chernivtsi oblast in the Ukraine, while the southern portion remained in Romania as part of Suceava. Galicia was ruled by Austria from 1772-1919, by Poland from 1920-1939, and by the Soviet Union afyter 1946. It now comprises L'viv, Ivano-Frankivs'k and Ternopil oblasts, Ukraine.
