Sible de Blaauw gaat tijdens zijn lezing in op het kerkgebouw als drager van religie en cultuur in een weergaloze continuïteit tussen het oude Rome en het eigentijdse Amsterdam. De kunsthistoricus Frits van der Meer noemde het kerkgebouw de kostbaarste schepping van de vroegchristelijke kunst. Kees Fens koesterde kerken uit alle tijden als plekken van ruimte en licht.
