Abigail Barton was brought up in Bath by Lady Jordan; her own parents died when she was a baby. Now her trustee, Mr Wood, insists that she goes to London for the Season, but Abby has no desire to marry. Abigail's sponsor, Lady Padmore, is bringing out her own daughter, Caroline, this Season, determined to marry her to cousin Julian. Meanwhile, Julian, intrigued by Abigail's unconventionality, lends his house for the ball.
