About This Book

This volume is an appendix to Bernd Baselt's three-volume 'Catalogue of George Frederick Händel's works (HWV)'. It contains all the compositions attributed to the composer in the 18th century, most of which were previously unknown to researchers. The authors examined and described compositions contained in over 400 manuscripts in Europe and further afield, following the philological principle of authenticity criticism. Apart from a few smaller vocal and instrumental works by Händel, the discovery of a 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' in London's Royal Academy of Music was one of the unforeseen events. This highly-accomplished work, composed during Händel's travels in Italy was first performed at the 2001 Göttingen Händel Festival, and caused a sensation in the musical world.
