This book explains the roles of plague and the Swedish Navy in the evolution of the geographical, monarchal Sweden into a world power beginning in the seventeenth century, and how elements of that establishment survive in de-militarized, social-democratic, modern Sweden. The focus is on Karlskrona, a southern harbor city on the Baltic Sea.
