About This Book

The Pátio do Colégio (in Portuguese School Yard, written in the archaic orthography Pateo do Collegio) is the name given to the historical Jesuit church and school in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The name is also used to refer to the square in front of the church. The Pátio do Colégio marks the site where the city was founded in 1554. The research project aims to study the transformations involving the site in the period between 1889 and 1979. By analyzing how the religious dimension strengthened the process of returning the land of the Pátio do Colégio to the Jesuits in 1954 and, later, the reconstruction of the architectural ensemble, that begun from 1955, in addition to the dispersion and preservation of objects considered sacred from the old buildings of the Pátio do Colégio, we seek to understand how groups linked to the Catholic Church and, in particular, to the Society of Jesus influenced the return of the sacred character of this gradually secularized territory since the expulsion of the Jesuits in the 18th century, assisting in the reconstruction and validation of the religious ensemble.
