About This Book

Malmo, Sweden, in the early 1900s: live Maria and Sigfrid live in a working-class neighborhood with their seven children. Sigfrid is a strong manual laborer whose prodigious philandering and alcohol consumption causes a strained marriage. When Maria attempts to sell a camera they won in a raffle, the curious shopkeeper and photographer Sebastian Pedersen instead teaches her how to use it and gifts her with the chemicals she'll need to develop the pictures. She is surprised by the miracle of catching a moment in time and preserving it in all its wonder; and thereafter, Maria explores the gift of photography. She grows into a woman of substance as she learns a skill, fine-tunes her gaze, and records life in the neighborhood around her.
