About This Book
The catalog is the record of the exhibition "Los Carpinteros: Vital Object", and comprises a selection of works produced with the creative use of architecture, sculpture and design by one of today's most acclaimed art collectives. Los Carpinteros - Alexandre Jesús Arrechea Zambrano (Cuba, 1970); Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés (Cuba, 1971); Dagoberto Rodríguez Sanchez (Cuba, 1969) - are known for their strong social appeal for works and for acid, sagacious and humorous criticism. Artists question the usefulness of things and explore the clash between function and object. The catalog consists of images of all the works that make up the exhibition: drawings, watercolors, sculptures, installations, still videos and the site specific works, developed in Brazil. Founded in 1992, the name of the collective was attributed to the artists empathy with the material worked and with the craft that was rescued as an aesthetic strategy. "The success and recognition of the work by Los Carpinteros, first as a trio, and then as a duo with Dagoberto Rodríguez and Marco Castillo is undoubtedly a phenomenon within international art.
