Because of his knowledge of Vermont's Ascutney Mountain, twelve-year-old Will Ryan is practically adopted by the young men of the 129th Company of the Civilian Conservation Corps when they arrive in the spring of 1933, which gives Will a welcome break from excessive chores on his uncle's farm.
